If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with cancer, it is highly likely that they will have to undergo chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment.
Chemotherapy is an administration specified drugs to poison the cancer cells that are rapidly reproducing within the body. Unfortunately this has an adverse affect on the hair shaft and nails as the chemotherapy also destroys the cells which are responsible for their formation and growth causing hair to shed prematurely.
Some drugs can cause hair loss on the scalp and the loss of pubic hair, arm and leg hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes. Some drugs cause only the loss of head hair, it can vary dramatically from person to person.
This process can not be resolved with shampoos, conditioners or hair growth stimulants, and although the hair fallen will naturally start to grow back within 6 months it can take up to 18 months for it to fully recover to it's original length and style.
Our team of experts understand how upsetting this can be, but are there to give you the right advice and treatment in helping you to look more aesthetically like your old self, while you are going through treatment.
We will not cause further damage to the hair while it is recovering, the new hair will be very fragile and it is important that you recieve the right advice and hair choice options to allow your hair to regrow healthily.
The NHS prescribed cancer hair loss treatment option is to supply a synthetic wig. This is a free treatment, but synthetic wigs do not look natural and can not be styled with heated products, the colour is also very artificial looking and the hair does not last very long.

If undergoing radiotherapy to the head this often causes scalp hair loss. This hair loss can be reduced in some patients if a cooling cap (Scalp Hyperthermia) is worn at the time of treatment. Scalp hyperthermia is a method of cooling the scalp with ice packs or cooling caps (cold caps) for a period of time before, during, and after each chemotherapy or radiation therapy treatment to try to prevent or reduce hair loss. Depending on the dose of radiation to the scalps hair does not always grow back to it's original state.
Hair loss will start to occur within 2 - 4 weeks or treatment, it may fall out quickly in clumps or gradually and will get worse 1 - 2 months after starting therapy, scalp sensitivity while combing or brushing is also common.
